Course Information

Welcome to A Level Graphics year one.
Thank you for choosing the Coulsdon Sixth Form Graphic Communication course.  On this page you will find links to the course information.  This includes course planners, course overview, what the components are and how you are assessed.

Course Overview: what to expect with the two-year A/level
This is a two-year course with 100% coursework in the first year. During year one you will sit a mock exam towards the end, based on pervious exam papers and marked as if it was a real exam.  This will give you an end of year mark, which will go towards deciding your progression onto year 2.

In the second year there are two components a personal investigation that is coursework and worth 60% of your mark and an externally set themed exam, which is worth 40% of your mark.

Possible areas of study in both years will include: general illustration, typography, corporate identity and branding consultancy, information graphics, computer-generated imagery, 2D animation, 3D modelling, design for learning, print technology, web design, television, video and computer games.

Course overview: your first year
The course in year one will give you the opportunity to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills.  This provides a sound basis for progression to more confident and personal creative journeys during the mid to latter part of year one. Your component for year one is called: The Personal Creative Enquiry.

The Personal Creative Enquiry
Is a single component (100% coursework) that enables you to undertake a major critical, practical and theoretical investigation based on subject matter that has personal significance.

Critical, practical and theoretical elements of the Personal Creative Enquiry will be purposefully integrated so that they mutually support the whole teaching and learning experience. They will be assessed together through the four Assessment Objectives, placing equal value on creative processes and their outcomes.

How are you assessed?
You will be assessed through the four Assessment Objectives (AO1-4), placing equal mark value on creative processes and their outcomes. Your investigations will be recorded in a sketchbook, presented to your teacher each week for continual assessment and feedback.

AO1 Contextual understanding
Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

AO2 Creative making
Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

AO3 Reflective recording
Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

AO4 Personal presentation

Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Use the project pages to see a more detailed breakdown of what each project provides.
